Adjustable gastric banding also sometimes referred to as “Lap Band” or “Realize band” is considered to be the least invasive surgery for weight loss. In this procedure, an implant is placed, which is a soft silicone ring with an expandable balloon in the center, around the top part of the stomach.
This procedure creates a two-compartment stomach, with a much smaller top part above the band. Following which when a person eats enough food just to fill the top part of the stomach. Over time, the food passes through the opening of the band into the remainder of the stomach, and digestion occurs normally.
However, in order to have a positive outcome, patients must be willing to make major changes in their eating and lifestyle habits. Habits that will comprise of planned eating with healthy food choices, careful chewing. Also, it is important to note that not mixing solid food and liquid at a meal is critical to success. The inability to comply with these behaviors will result in adverse symptoms such as vomiting, reflux, or pain. In addition to the changes, a comprehensive follow-up program including dietary counseling and often monthly visits are important to increase the chances of durable success. Regular exercise is also suggested for a healthy lifestyle.
The band can be adjusted. This is done by adding or removing fluid in a balloon around the band. This is done through a port placed under the skin of the abdomen. A tube leads from the port to the band around the stomach. The doctor will use a needle to go through the skin into the port. Fluid is injected into the port. The fluid goes through the tube into the balloon around the band and squeezes the top of the stomach. If the band becomes too tight, some fluid will be removed.
Adjustable gastric banding should not be used for a patient who is a poor candidate for surgery, or if the patient has a certain stomach or intestinal disorders. Also, people who are addicted to alcohol or drugs are not eligible for such a procedure. It should not be used if someone is not able or willing to follow dietary and other recommendations.
How is Gastric Banding done?
Gastric banding is often a minimally invasive surgery performed with small incisions, a laparoscope, and special instruments.
Is it possible to get down to my ideal body weight?
Yes. Most patients lose about half of their excess weight following gastric banding, and they lose it slowly and steadily, about one to two pounds per week.
How long will it take to recover after surgery?
Adjustable Gastric Banding System surgery is performed laparoscopically, so patients typically spend less than 24 hours in the hospital and some patients return to work in about a week and to exercise in about a month or two.
Does the lap-band limit any physical activity?
The Adjustable Gastric Banding System should not hamper physical activity, including aerobics, stretching, and strenuous exercise, however, a consultation from the treating doctor is mandatory.
Will I need plastic surgery for the surplus skin after losing weight?
That is not always the case. In fact, plastic surgery will not be considered for at least a year or two after the operation since the skin will sometimes mold itself around the new body tissue.
