Gastric Sleeve Surgery

Gastric Sleeve Surgery

Gastric sleeve surgery is a type of weight-loss surgery and is often referred to as bariatric surgery. It is also termed as sleeve gastrectomy or vertical sleeve gastrectomy (VSG).

Gastric sleeve surgery helps to restrict the food intake that leads to weight loss. It is basically a laparoscopic surgery, with small incisions in the upper abdomen. Here, most of the left part of the stomach is removed. The small intestine is not operated on or changed during this surgery. After the surgery, even less intake of food will make you feel fuller.

Gastric sleeve surgery is generally used to treat severe obesity. It is advised for people who have tried other weight loss methods as well but with little or no success. It is generally recommended to people with a body mass index or BMI over 40.

FAQ's

Will the weight loss last after gastric sleeve surgery?

Yes. It has been reported to have shown sustained weight loss.

What are the advantages of the gastric sleeve?

The main advantage of gastric sleeve surgery is that it does not need to create a new connection between the stomach and small bowel (anastomosis).  Long term complications are less likely to occur with the gastric sleeve procedure and there is almost no risk for internal hernia or marginal ulcers after gastric sleeve surgery.

Am I eligible for the gastric sleeve surgery?

For obese patients with esophageal dysmotility which is difficulty in swallowing and gastroparesis which is where the food stays in the stomach for too long, gastric bypass surgery, severe Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) especially those with Barrett's esophagus is the preferred operation.

How long will I be in the hospital after the gastric sleeve operation?

Most patients go home within a week after surgery and those who are recovering from this operation are advised to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.
