Gastric sleeve surgery is a type of weight-loss surgery and is often referred to as bariatric surgery. It is also termed as sleeve gastrectomy or vertical sleeve gastrectomy (VSG).
Gastric sleeve surgery helps to restrict the food intake that leads to weight loss. It is basically a laparoscopic surgery, with small incisions in the upper abdomen. Here, most of the left part of the stomach is removed. The small intestine is not operated on or changed during this surgery. After the surgery, even less intake of food will make you feel fuller.
Gastric sleeve surgery is generally used to treat severe obesity. It is advised for people who have tried other weight loss methods as well but with little or no success. It is generally recommended to people with a body mass index or BMI over 40.
WHY & WHEN IS IT DONE?
Sleeve gastrectomy is generally done to help lose excess weight and also reduce the risk of potential life-threatening health problems that are related to weight, including:
It is important to note here that, one must also be willing to make permanent changes to lead a healthier lifestyle such as monitoring nutrition, lifestyle and behavior, and other medical conditions.

Yes. It has been reported to have shown sustained weight loss.
What are the advantages of the gastric sleeve?
The main advantage of gastric sleeve surgery is that it does not need to create a new connection between the stomach and small bowel (anastomosis).
