Gastric sleeve surgery is a type of weight-loss surgery and is often referred to as bariatric surgery. It is also termed as sleeve gastrectomy or vertical sleeve gastrectomy (VSG).
Gastric sleeve surgery helps to restrict the food intake that leads to weight loss. It is basically a laparoscopic surgery, with small incisions in the upper abdomen. Here, most of the left part of the stomach is removed. The small intestine is not operated on or changed during this surgery. After the surgery, even less intake of food will make you feel fuller.
Gastric sleeve surgery is generally used to treat severe obesity. It is advised for people who have tried other weight loss methods as well but with little or no success. It is generally recommended to people with a body mass index or BMI over 40.
