In total anomalous pulmonary venous return, also referred to as total anomalous pulmonary venous connection, the blood vessels, that is, pulmonary veins that lead from the lungs attach to the heart in incorrect places, instead of attaching correctly to the upper left heart chamber or left atrium. Thus, instead of flowing into the left atrium as it normally does, oxygen-rich blood returning to the heart from the pulmonary veins returns to the upper right heart chamber or right atrium and mixes with oxygen-poor blood either before entering the heart or in the right atrium.
Some blood may then move through a hole between the atria, a condition referred to as atrial septal defect to the left atrium, and then to the lower left heart chamber or left ventricle and on to the main blood vessel or aorta that delivers blood to the body.
An echocardiogram is generally used to diagnose this condition wherein the test uses sound waves to produce video images of the child's heart in motion. An echocardiogram can record the pulmonary veins leading to the right atrium, holes in the heart, and the size of the heart chambers.
What causes TAPVR?
Total anomalous pulmonary venous return (TAPVR) is a congenital disorder in which all four pulmonary veins do not connect normally to the left atrium.
How TAPVR is diagnosed?
TAPVR sometimes might be diagnosed during pregnancy, however, often these defects are diagnosed soon after a baby is born.
How TAPVR is treated?
Babies with TAPVR will need surgery to repair the defect. The age at which the surgery is done depends on the severity of the condition and the specific structure of the abnormal connections between the pulmonary veins and the right atrium.
What are the outcomes of the Surgery?
The outcome of surgical repair for total anomalous pulmonary venous return is generally excellent when it is performed electively, in relatively healthy children without obstructed pulmonary veins.
