Angioplasty and Stent Replacement
Angioplasty is a procedure to open blocked coronary arteries. The goal of the surgery is to restore blood flow to the heart muscle without having the patient undergo open-heart surgery. It is also called Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI). It is conducted by inserting a special catheter or a long – hollow tube with a tiny balloon at its tip into the blood vessel and to the blocked coronary artery. Once the catheter reached the blocked artery, the balloon is inflated at the narrowed area of the coronary artery which presses the clot blocking the artery against the sides and making more room for blood flow.
On the other hand, a stent is an expandable metal mesh coil that is inserted into the newly opened area of the artery. Once the stent has been placed, the tissue will start to form over it within a few days and will be completely covered within a month. This is generally done to prevent the artery from narrowing or closing again.

What Is Coronary Angioplasty?
It is done to open blocked arteries and allows blood flow to the heart muscle. It opens a clogged coronary artery by inflating a tiny balloon in it.
What is a stent and how is the one used?
A stent is a wire mesh tube used to prop open an artery that's recently been cleared by means of Angioplasty. The stent is collapsed to a small diameter and moved into the area of the blockage wherein the balloon is inflated; the stent expands, and locks in place and forms a scaffold. This holds the artery open permanently.
When are stents used?
Stents are used depending on the features of the artery blockage. This includes the size of the artery and where the blockage is.
What are the advantages of using a stent?
In certain patients, stents reduce the re-narrowing that occurs after angioplasty or procedures involving catheters. Stents also help restore normal blood flow and keep an artery open if it has been torn or injured by the balloon catheter.
What precautions should be taken after a stent procedure?
Patients who have had a stent procedure must take one or more blood-thinning agents over a period of 6 - 12 months.
