Laser resurfacing is a cosmetic procedure done to treat facial wrinkles or any kind of skin irregularities, such as blemishes or acne scars. This procedure is done by directing short, concentrated pulsating beams of light in the affected skin, precisely removing skin layer by layer. This procedure is also sometimes referred to as lasabrasion, laser peel, or laser vaporization.
Techniques by which Laser Resurfacing is done:
Ablative laser: This is a wounding laser that removes thin layers of skin. Types of ablative treatments include the carbon dioxide (CO2) laser and the erbium laser.
Here, an intense beam of light energy or laser is directed at the skin. It destroys the outer layer of skin called the 'epidermis'. At the same time, the laser heats the underlying skin 'dermis', that causes collagen fibers to shrink. As the wound heals, new skin forms which is comparatively smoother and tighter. Ablative laser resurfacing typically takes between 30 minutes and 2 hours, depending on the technique used and the size of the area treated.
Nonablative laser: This is a non-wounding laser, which stimulates collagen growth and tightens the underlying skin.
In this procedure, the eyes are protected and skin is numbed with a topical anesthetic one hour before treatment. In this procedure, the laser damages collagen beneath the skin and stimulates the growth of new collagen, tightening underlying skin and improving skin tone and appearance.
It can be noted here that Non-ablative laser resurfacing is less invasive and requires less recovery time, also it is less effective than is ablative laser resurfacing.
