Transradial Prosthesis

Transradial Prosthesis

Transradial amputation is the partial amputation of the arm below the elbow along the radial bone. This type of surgery leaves the elbow and most of your arm intact, which makes recovery easier and makes it more likely that you will be able to continue to use your arm even after the amputation.

More About Treatment

After amputation, it is most likely that the patient is fitted with some type of prosthetic. There are generally three basic types of transradial prostheses:

  • Cosmetic Prosthesis:  It is used for appearance only and does not actually have any movement.
  • Conventional Or Body-Powered Prosthesis: It is generally connected to the body by a series of cables. They ensure movement by making it possible to move the prosthesis and even open and close the artificial hand.
  • Myoelectric Prosthesis: This is the newest and most advanced form of transradial prosthesis that connects an electronic hand to the muscles in the arm. Here, the electrodes send a signal to the artificial limb as the muscles contract causing it to move in much the same way as your real hand.

FAQ's

How does the prosthesis work?

A standard prosthesis is made of conventional component parts that create the leg and prosthetic foot. These parts are connected to a socket that fits over the residual limb.

What is the function of the socket?

The socket allows the prosthetic device to connect to the residual limb. An additional layer, called a liner, fits over the residual limb and provides a barrier between the skin and the socket. The liner provides cushion and comfort while providing a better fit for the socket.
