A cochlear implant is generally a small electronic device that is implanted within the ears that electrically stimulates the cochlear nerve which is responsible for hearing. The implant has external and internal parts. The external part sits behind the ear and picks up sounds with the help of a microphone. It then processes the sound and transmits it to the internal part of the implant.
A cochlear implant is much different than a hearing aid that makes sounds louder but may not significantly improve speech and understanding. When a person struggles to understand speech, even with appropriately fitted hearing aids, a cochlear implant should be considered.
Why it's done?
Cochlear implant surgery is done in a hospital or clinic and lasts two to four hours. The surgeon makes a cut behind the ear and opens the mastoid bone and creates an opening between the facial nerves to access the cochlea. The surgeon then inserts the implant electrodes into the cochlea and places an electronic device called the receiver under the skin behind the ear, securing it to the skull in this area.
The incisions are then closed, and patient will be moved into the recovery area and watched closely before being discharged.
A cochlear implant requires a period of training and therapy after surgery. During this time, the patient will learn how to care for the implant. The patient will also have aural, or hearing, rehabilitation to assist with learning how to interpret the new electrical signals, as well as how to apply these new listening skills to better communicate. This will help to improve the use of the implant.
How Cochlear Implant is helpful?
Cochlear implants may be a much more effective alternative to hearing aids for adults and children with severe-to-profound hearing loss.
Am I eligible for a cochlear implant?
If you are struggling to hear with hearing aids, you may be a candidate for cochlear implants.
Can Cochlear Implant be done in both ears?
Depending on candidacy people with a hearing loss sometimes get both ears implanted at the same time. This is called “simultaneous implantation,” and it’s done to achieve bilateral hearing (hearing in both ears).

Hospital Profile Description Currently Not Available
My baby boy just after his birth was discovered with hearing defect. We consulted the best of doctors in Nigeria and they were of the opinion that Cochlear Implant surgery was required. However, either it is costly or proper medical practitioners are not available in our country. Then we started to search for hospitals outside my country for the treatment. The hospitals in US & UK charged a huge amount for the treatment which was not affordable. Then one of my friends told me about India for good hospitals and low cost. The next challenge is a connecting link I searched on the internet and I found Medtravels website. I filled up the query form on the website and I got a call from the patient query team and she told me to send the medical reports. I sent the reports by mail and the team got back to me with the opinion of doctors and treatment packages from multiple hospitals. The quote was affordable to me and I was satisfied with the profile of the treating doctors and hospitals. Medtravels helped me with the passport, visa and the air tickets which saved a lot of my time. On the day we arrived in India, people from Medtravels came to receive us at the airport. We were then taken to the hospital and a room was already booked for us and was kept ready. All our admission formalities were done in the room and we were made comfortable. I had never seen such caring services in hospitals in my country. My child was seen by a team of doctors and a series of tests were carried out. The surgery was planned and it went on successfully. We were explained everything clearly before and after the surgery. Overall it was a great experience. Thanks to the team Medtravels and everyone who helped me and my child at every step.
