Septoplasty is a surgical intervention generally conducted to straighten the bone and cartilage that separates or divides the space between the two nostrils or septum, often when the septum is crooked, this condition is known as a ‘Deviated Septum’. A deviated septum can make it harder to breathe through the nose and can also increase the risk of sinus infections due to poor drainage.
During this procedure, the nasal septum is usually repositioned to the middle of the nose by cutting and removing the parts of the nasal septum before reinserting them in the proper position.
Why It Is Done?
Most often a crooked septum is considered common. However, when the condition is severe, it can lead to a deviated septum and can block either one side of the nose and reduce airflow, causing difficulty breathing through the sides of the nose.
Precautions after Septoplasty
After the procedure, certain precautions are required to be followed to avoid further bleeding or swelling depending upon the severity of the condition:
What is a nasal septum?
The septum is described as the midline thin wall that separates the right and left nasal cavities. It’s mostly made of cartilage in the front and a thin plate of the bone in the back, covered by a mucous membrane covering on both sides.
Why does my septum deviate?
Although trauma can cause a septum to become deviated (crooked), most people with deviated septums have never suffered any trauma and can relate to a developmental defect
When can I go back to work?
Most people can go back to work about 3 to 5 days after the procedure.
