A tonsillectomy is a surgical procedure that is done to remove the tonsils which are two small glands located in the back of the throat. Tonsils house white blood cells to help fight infection, but sometimes the tonsils themselves become infected. This infection often makes the tonsils swell and give a sore throat.
Symptoms of tonsillitis
Conditions Treated With Tonsillectomy
Tonsillectomy is usually done as an outpatient procedure. An overnight stay is recommended only if complications arise or if the surgery is done on a young child, or if there is a complex medical condition.
During the surgery
Because a tonsillectomy is performed under general anesthesia, the patient will not be aware of the procedure or experience during the surgery.
The surgeon may cut out the tonsils using a scalpel or a specialized surgical tool that uses high-energy heat or sound waves to remove or destroy tissues and stop bleeding.
During recovery
Nearly everyone experiences pain after a tonsillectomy. Pain is most often in the throat and frequently in the ears but may also be located in the jaw or the neck.
What is Tonsillectomy?
Your child may have throat infections and need surgery to remove the tonsils called tonsillectomy. These glands are located at the back of the throat.
What are the potential complications?
Bleeding, pain and difficulty breathing in the first 24 to 48 hours after surgery are the most likely complications of tonsillectomy
How long should it take my child to recover?
The surgery generally takes about 30 minutes to complete, but the recovery time for anesthesia is longer than the procedure itself and takes about two to three hours.

My baby boy just after his birth was discovered with hearing defect. We consulted the best of doctors in Nigeria and they were of the opinion that Cochlear Implant surgery was required. However, either it is costly or proper medical practitioners are not available in our country. Then we started to search for hospitals outside my country for the treatment. The hospitals in US & UK charged a huge amount for the treatment which was not affordable. Then one of my friends told me about India for good hospitals and low cost. The next challenge is a connecting link I searched on the internet and I found Medtravels website. I filled up the query form on the website and I got a call from the patient query team and she told me to send the medical reports. I sent the reports by mail and the team got back to me with the opinion of doctors and treatment packages from multiple hospitals. The quote was affordable to me and I was satisfied with the profile of the treating doctors and hospitals. Medtravels helped me with the passport, visa and the air tickets which saved a lot of my time. On the day we arrived in India, people from Medtravels came to receive us at the airport. We were then taken to the hospital and a room was already booked for us and was kept ready. All our admission formalities were done in the room and we were made comfortable. I had never seen such caring services in hospitals in my country. My child was seen by a team of doctors and a series of tests were carried out. The surgery was planned and it went on successfully. We were explained everything clearly before and after the surgery. Overall it was a great experience. Thanks to the team Medtravels and everyone who helped me and my child at every step.
