Hernia Repair Surgery

Hernia Repair Surgery

A hernia occurs when an internal tissue breaks through a hole in the muscles. Hernia repair surgery generally involves restoring the displaced tissues to their actual position.

Hernias usually don’t get better if left untreated rather they tend to get bigger. However, in rare cases, they can lead to life-threatening complications. But not every hernia needs immediate treatment, but again, it all depends on the size and symptoms. A surgical hernia repair involves pushing the bulge back inside the body part that should contain it and keeping it there.

Are You A Candidate Of Hernia Repair?

  • Persistent hernia pain or discomfort
  • Pain or discomfort intensifying or worsening over time
  • Large hernias
  • Fast-growing hernias
  • Hernias that put pressure on nerves to cause irritation and numbness

More About Treatment

Types of Hernia Repair

  • Herniorrhaphy: It is the traditional type of hernia surgery that is done by making a long incision directly over the hernia and using surgical tools to open the cut deep enough to access the hernia. Tissues or a displaced organ are then surgically restored to their original location and the hernia sac is removed. The surgeon stitches the sides of the muscle opening or the hole through which the hernia protruded.
  • Hernioplasty: In this type of procedure, instead of stitching the muscle opening and closing it, the surgeon often covers it with a sterile mesh, usually made of flexible plastics, such as polypropylene, however, it may differ. In this procedure, the surgeon makes small cuts around the hole in the shape of the mesh and then stitches the patch into the healthy, intact surrounding tissues. In such cases, the damaged or weak tissues surrounding the hernia will use the mesh, as a support and strengthening scaffold as they re-grow. It is also referred to as tension-free hernia repair.
