A ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt is a medical device that relieves pressure on the brain caused by fluid accumulation. It is basically a surgical intervention that primarily treats a condition called hydrocephalus that occurs when excess cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) collects in the brain’s ventricles.
The prime function of CSF is to cushion your brain and protect it from injury inside the skull. The fluid acts as a delivery system for nutrients that the brain needs, and it also takes away waste products. Normally, CSF flows through these ventricles to the base of the brain. When this normal flow is disrupted, the buildup of fluid can create harmful pressure on the brain’s tissues and eventually the brain. A VP shunt is surgically placed inside one of the brain’s ventricles to divert fluid away from the brain and restore normal flow and absorption of CSF.
What causes excess fluid to build up?
There may be various reasons which can lead to excess fluid buildup around the brain such as:
Symptoms of Hydrocephalus
What is a VP Shunt?
A VP shunt is used to drain extra cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from the brain. CSF is the fluid that surrounds your brain and spinal cord. It’s made in the ventricles (hollow spaces) inside your brain.
