Cervicectomy

Cervicectomy

Surgical removal of the cervix is called a cervicectomy or a radical trachelectomy (RT). It involves removing the cervix and some surrounding tissue as well as the upper one-third of the vagina and pelvic lymph nodes. The cervix is part of the female reproductive tract that lies between the uterus and the vagina and is a narrow, short, cone-shaped organ that’s sometimes referred to as the mouth of the uterus. The cervix is commonly removed through the vagina (called an RVT) or sometimes through the abdomen (RAT).

The primary reason for undergoing a cervicectomy is cervical cancer. Cervical cancer is the third leading cause of cancer deaths among women and one of the most common cancers affecting the female reproductive tract. Many cervical cancers stem from infection with the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), which is transmitted through sexual intercourse

Symptoms of Cervicectomy

Early-stage cervical cancer often goes unnoticed due to the lack of symptoms. However, later-stage cases can cause the following symptoms:

  • Vaginal bleeding
  • Pelvic pain
  • Pain during sex

More About Treatment

How Cervicectomy is conducted?

There are several ways the cervix and other relevant matter can be removed:

  • Through the vagina in a procedure called Radical Vaginal Trachelectomy.
  • Through the abdomen in a surgery called Radical Abdominal Trachelectomy.
  • Laparoscopically through a procedure called Laparoscopic Radical Trachelectomy. This involves making a small incision in the abdomen and inserting a laparoscope to remove tissue.
  • Using a robotic arm called a robotic trachelectomy inserted through tiny cuts in the skin.
