Surgical removal of the cervix is called a cervicectomy or a radical trachelectomy (RT). It involves removing the cervix and some surrounding tissue as well as the upper one-third of the vagina and pelvic lymph nodes. The cervix is part of the female reproductive tract that lies between the uterus and the vagina and is a narrow, short, cone-shaped organ that’s sometimes referred to as the mouth of the uterus. The cervix is commonly removed through the vagina (called an RVT) or sometimes through the abdomen (RAT).
The primary reason for undergoing a cervicectomy is cervical cancer. Cervical cancer is the third leading cause of cancer deaths among women and one of the most common cancers affecting the female reproductive tract. Many cervical cancers stem from infection with the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), which is transmitted through sexual intercourse
Symptoms of Cervicectomy
Early-stage cervical cancer often goes unnoticed due to the lack of symptoms. However, later-stage cases can cause the following symptoms:
How Cervicectomy is conducted?
There are several ways the cervix and other relevant matter can be removed:
What is Cervicectomy?
It is an operation to remove cancer from the cervix (neck of the womb). It involves removing the cervix and the upper third of the vagina.
When is it done?
This surgery is only performed on women with early-stage cervical cancer, who wish to preserve their ability to become pregnant in the future.
Are there alternatives to having a radical trachelectomy?
Radiotherapy can be given to treat cervical cancer but would prevent from carrying future pregnancies. Chemotherapy is sometimes given with radiotherapy to make it work more effectively.
