Open reduction internal fixation (ORIF) is a surgery to fix severely broken bones. It is used to fix fractures in the arms and legs, including bones in the shoulder, elbow, wrist, hip, knee, and ankle. It is only used for serious fractures that cannot be treated with a cast or splint. These injuries are usually fractures that involve the joint and are displaced, unstable or those that involve the joint.
In this procedure, the surgeon makes an incision to re-align the bone through “Internal fixation” wherein the bones are held together with metal pins, plates, rods, or screws.
Although the success rate of ORIF is high, recovery depends mainly on the age, health condition of the patient, post-surgery rehabilitation as well as severity and location of the fracture. ORIF recovery can last 3 to 12 months. You’ll need physical or occupational therapy, pain medication, and lots of rest.
What Makes You Eligible For An ORIF Surgery?
Types of internal fixation devices include metal plates and screws, stainless steel pins and stabilizing rods forced into the cavity of the bone which is called intramedullary nails or IM nails. A cast is typically applied after surgery. For certain leg and ankle breaks, different types of cast may be used during the healing process: a non-weight-bearing cast used with crutches for the initial stage and a weight-bearing one when the healing is further progressed.
While most orthopedic implants are designed to stay in the body permanently, there are times when a second surgery may be needed to remove an implant which was placed solely to support the bone during healing. This is sometimes the case with a severe fracture of the tibia (shin bone) or femur (thigh bone), or when an external device (called an external fixator) is used.

When it is done?
It is done to treat major fractures that cannot be treated with a cast or splint. These injuries are usually fractures that are displaced, unstable or those that involve the joint.
How it can benefit us?
The surgery should help reduce pain and restore mobility by helping the bone heal in the right position.
What is the recovery time?
In this procedure, recovery takes 3 to 12 months. But every surgery is different and often recovery depends on the type, severity, and location of the fracture.

My day to day life started to hamper, due to unbearable back pain and painful limbs. I was scared of surgery as I have never been admitted in a hospital ever before in my life. I was confused with all the options popping in the internet. I came across the site of Medtravels and started exploring it. The reviews and testimonials gave me a confidence. I contacted them explained my condition and also how scared I am of the whole process. The team was so sensitive to my situation and always reassuring about the services and the whole treatment process. They provided me with multiple opinions with detailed profile of hospitals and doctors and I made my choice. Once am in the hospital, a minimally invasive surgery was performed and I was out of the hospital in just four days. The attention provided by all staff nurses and doctors are commendable, they were very kind and considerate. The team of Medtravels has always been a companion through my treatment journey. I am now back to a normal life and have regained my quality of life.
A couple of year back, I was diagnosed with arthritis in right leg and the only cure was a hip joint replacement surgery. I heard of Medtravels from a friend who happens to have some past business experience with the company. So, he helped me reach out to the Associates in Medtravels, who then asked for all my past medical reports, I shared the reports and almost within 24 hours I was given an estimate that actually suited my expenses. However, I went online for more information about the company and their hospitals and was very impressed by the response and tie-ups they had. I was to travel alone, so I was a little uncomfortable travelling to a completely different country. However, immediately upon arrival there was an executive from Medtravels to pick me up. It seemed much more organized than I expected it to be. That alone was comforting. Once I arrived at the hospital, I felt very reassured about my surgery seeing the world class facilities available in the Hospital. I felt very assured that I was in good hands as there was truly open communication between doctors and myself. After my successful surgery, I left India but with memories to cherish and a friend like Team Medtravels herein.
