Open reduction internal fixation (ORIF) is a surgery to fix severely broken bones. It is used to fix fractures in the arms and legs, including bones in the shoulder, elbow, wrist, hip, knee, and ankle. It is only used for serious fractures that cannot be treated with a cast or splint. These injuries are usually fractures that involve the joint and are displaced, unstable or those that involve the joint.
In this procedure, the surgeon makes an incision to re-align the bone through “Internal fixation” wherein the bones are held together with metal pins, plates, rods, or screws.
Although the success rate of ORIF is high, recovery depends mainly on the age, health condition of the patient, post-surgery rehabilitation as well as severity and location of the fracture. ORIF recovery can last 3 to 12 months. You’ll need physical or occupational therapy, pain medication, and lots of rest.

Types of internal fixation devices include metal plates and screws, stainless steel pins and stabilizing rods forced into the cavity of the bone which is called intramedullary nails or IM nails. My day to day life started to hamper, due to unbearable back pain and painful limbs. I was scared of surgery as I have never been admitted in a hospital ever before in my life.
