Open reduction internal fixation (ORIF) is a surgery to fix severely broken bones. It is used to fix fractures in the arms and legs, including bones in the shoulder, elbow, wrist, hip, knee, and ankle. It is only used for serious fractures that cannot be treated with a cast or splint. In this procedure, the surgeon makes an incision to re-align the bone through “Internal fixation” wherein the bones are held together with metal pins, plates, rods, or screws.
Although the success rate of ORIF is high, recovery depends mainly on the age, health condition of the patient, post-surgery rehabilitation as well as severity and location of the fracture. ORIF recovery can last 3 to 12 months. You’ll need physical or occupational therapy, pain medication, and lots of rest.
