The immune system is composed of WBCs, tissues, and organs. The immune system functions as such to defend the body against infections and other diseases. Immunotherapy fights cancer by enabling the immune system to fight cancer cells. It is also considered as a mode of biological therapy where the substances used are from living organisms that help to treat cancer.

Cancer immunotherapy is more like biologic therapy and includes checkpoint blockades, cancer vaccines, T cell transfer and other immune-modulating drugs such as cytokines and other adjuvant therapies. This is used in conjunction with surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation.

Cancer is capable of hiding from the immune system and also supports tumor growth with the help of it. Here, immunotherapy is used to wake up the immune system so that it recognizes cancer and attacks the disease—just as it does with most bacteria or viruses.

Immunotherapy therapy is not yet available for all types of cancer but wherever it is applicable, they are effective only for a percentage of patients.
