Lung Cancer

Lung Cancer

The lungs are two spongy organs in your chest that take in oxygen when you inhale and release carbon dioxide when you exhale. Lung cancer is a form of cancerous growth in your lungs. It is one of the leading causes of cancer deaths, among both men and women. Lung cancer claims more lives each year than do colon, prostate, ovarian and breast cancers combined.

People who smoke are at the greatest risk of having lung cancer, though lung cancer can also occur in people who have never smoked. The risk of lung cancer increases with the length of time and number of cigarettes being smoked.

Types OF Lung Cancer

Lung cancers are divided into two categories based on which lung cancer treatment is suggested:

  • Small cell lung cancer: Small cell lung cancer occurs exclusively in heavy smokers and is often less common.
  • Non-small cell lung cancer: Non-small cell lung cancer is a term for several types of lung cancers that behave in a similar way. These types of lung cancers include squamous cell carcinoma, adenocarcinoma and large cell carcinoma.
