Scoliosis Surgery

Scoliosis Surgery

Scoliosis is a sideways curvature of the spine. It often occurs mostly during the growth phase just before puberty. Although, scoliosis can be caused by several conditions such as cerebral palsy and muscular dystrophy the root cause of most scoliosis is unknown.

Most cases of scoliosis are mild, but some spine deformities may get more severe as children grow. A severe spinal curve can reduce the amount of space within the chest, which in turn makes it difficult for the lungs to function properly.

Scoliosis surgery is performed to repair abnormal curving of the spine. The goal is to safely straighten the spine and align the shoulders and hips to correct the child's back problem.

Symptoms of a Scoliosis

  • Uneven shoulders
  • One-shoulder blade appears more prominent than the other
  • Uneven waist
  • One hip higher than the other
  • The Spine will rotate or twist if scoliosis gets worse

Causes of a Scoliosis

However, the exact cause of scoliosis is unknown, but there are certain types of scoliosis that may result from:

  • Neuromuscular conditions like cerebral palsy or muscular dystrophy
  • Birth defects affecting the development of the bones
  • Injuries or infections of the spine

More About Treatment

Scoliosis surgery is generally done by using two methods to achieve maximum scoliosis correction:

  • Posterior Approach: It is done by implementing a surgical cut in the back and often takes several hours.
  • Thoracotomy: A surgical cut is done through the chest wall in this procedure. It often results in deflating the lung and removing a rib. Recovery after this surgery is often faster.

However, some surgeons use both of these approaches together. This is a much longer and more difficult operation.

FAQ's

What are the different types of scoliosis?

There are three different types of scoliosis: idiopathic, congenital and neuromuscular.

Can you prevent scoliosis?

No, scoliosis most likely develops because of genetics so there is nothing much that can be done.

Does the condition change with age?

In some cases, where the curvature is not severe, individuals have seen improvement without any major treatment. However, this is applicable for kids with smaller curves and a consultation with the physician is a must. When large curves are left untreated at a young age, they may become worse with time.

What can be the probable complications of Scoliosis Surgery?

Infection, bleeding, and pain at graft site are some of the complications that a patient may face after a Scoliosis Surgery.

How long will the scar be?

The incision will be as long as the part of the spine that will be fused. Incisions for a single curve generally measures 10 inches long.

Will the surgery stunt my growth?

When the spine is fused, spinal growth will only stop in the area of the spine that is operated on. Since most fusions are not performed until a child's spinal growth is nearly complete, there should be minimal effect on spinal height.
