A pelvic lymph node dissection (PLND) is a surgical intervention to remove the lymph nodes from the pelvis. It is also called a ‘Pelvic Lymphadenectomy’, ‘Ilioinguinal Lymphadenectomy’ or ‘Deep Groin Dissection’.
The lymph nodes in the pelvis lie along the internal, external and common iliac arteries that supply blood to the lower abdomen and trunk of the body. The main groups of pelvic lymph nodes are classified as follows:
These lymph nodes are small bean-shaped organs of lymphatic tissue and are part of the lymphatic system which helps fight infections and are constituted of lymph vessels, lymph fluid, lymph nodes, bone marrow and the lymphatic organs that again comprise of the thymus, adenoid, tonsil, and spleen.
Lymph vessels are very thin tubes similar to blood vessels that help to collect and move lymph fluid away from tissues into the lymph nodes. The lymph fluid can carry cancer cells from where cancer started into the lymph nodes.

With PLND, the patient is required to be in the hospital for approximately 3 days.
What precautions are to be followed after PLND?
The patient is advised to avoid strenuous activities and heavy lifting for at least 2 weeks. However, normal walking every day is advisable but with prior consultation with the treating doctor.
