Transurethral incision of the prostate (TUIP) is a procedure to treat urinary symptoms that are generally caused by an enlarged prostate. In this procedure, a combined visual and surgical instrument referred to as Resectoscope is inserted through the tip of the penis into the tube that helps carry urine from the bladder or ‘urethra’.
What are the benefits of a TUIP?
Lower risk of bleeding: TUIP can be a good option for men who have a bleeding disorder that doesn't allow their blood to clot normally.
Minimal hospital stay: TUIP can be done on an outpatient basis and might be a safer option than surgery if you have certain other health problems.
The Procedure
The surgeon cuts one or two small sections in the area where the prostate and the bladder are connected generally referred to as bladder neck in order to open the urinary channel and allow urine to pass through more easily.
It is one of the minimally invasive treatment options for a condition known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
When TUIP is done?
TUIP helps reduce urinary symptoms caused by BPH as well as to treat or prevent complications due to blocked urine flow, such as:
What to expect from TUIP?
TUIP is a much less invasive procedure where the patient can go on the same day. One may not be able to urinate and may sometimes require to have a catheter to drain the bladder. This may last for a week or less.
How it is done?
The surgeon uses an instrument inserted into the urethra that generates an electric current or laser beam to make incisions in the prostate where the prostate meets the bladder.
What happens after the procedure?
After the procedure, you may stay in a recovery area for at least a few hours.
