Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) is a surgery used to treat urinary problems that are caused by an enlarged prostate. An instrument called a resectoscope is inserted through the tip of the penis which helps the doctor to monitor and trim away excess prostate tissue that is blocking urine flow.
TURP is generally considered an option for men who have severe urinary problems and have not responded to medication. While TURP has been considered the most effective treatment for an enlarged prostate, a number of other, minimally invasive procedures are also considered effective based on the severity of the condition. These procedures generally cause fewer complications and have a quicker recovery period.
The TURP procedure takes approximately 60 to 90 minutes to perform. Before surgery, general anesthesia is administered along with a dose of antibiotics to prevent infection.
TURP typically helps to relieve symptoms quickly. Most men experience stronger urine flow within a few days coupled with follow-up treatment to ease symptoms.
What is Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP)?
It is a surgical procedure for men that involves removing part of the prostate gland and is used to treat a common condition where the prostate becomes enlarged, causing difficulty with passing urine.
What causes an enlarged prostate?
It happens because of an increase in the number of cells in the prostate gland which is thought to be caused by hormonal changes.
Why should I do pelvic floor exercises after TURP?
Your pelvic floor is a layer of muscle that supports your bladder and bowel. Pelvic floor exercises may help to improve control of your bladder when you get home after your TURP.
