Varicose vein stripping is a surgical procedure that generally removes the varicose veins from the legs or thighs. These varicose veins are the puffy and twisted veins that one can see under the skin. In appearance, they are generally red or bluish-purple in color.
These varicose veins most often appear in the legs, but they may also develop in other parts of the body when the valves in the veins are not functioning correctly. These normally have one-way valves that prevent the blood from flowing back up towards the heart. When these valves don’t work properly, the blood begins to collect in the vein rather than continuing to the heart and makes the vein fill with blood, resulting in painful, swollen veins.
Why It Is Done?
During varicose vein stripping, several small cuts, or incisions will be made near the top and bottom of the damaged vein. The incision will be in the groin and farther down the leg, either in the calf or ankle area. Following which a thin, flexible plastic wire is inserted into the vein through the groin incision that will be tied to the vein and pulled out through the cut in the lower leg. The surgeon will then close the cuts with stitches and place bandages and compression stockings on the legs.
It usually takes two to four weeks to recover from varicose vein stripping. However, the recovery time will depend on how many veins were stripped and where they were located.
When is it done?
Vein stripping is generally done on large varicose veins. It also can be done to prevent venous skin ulcers from returning after treatment.
Why it is important to treat Varicose Veins?
Every case of varicose veins is different. In some cases, the symptoms worsen and in other cases, it could lead to more serious, potentially life-threatening conditions.
Who should not have vein stripping?
